Sobre las Olas, or “Over the Waves”, is a well known and pretty old Mexican Waltz, composed by Juventino Rosas in 1884. It’s the first tune in the Palmer Hughes accordion method series book 2 where I’ve been confronted with the meaningful existence of the black keys

Yet another American folk classic in the Palmer Hughes accordion method book 2. Wikipedia says: Although the first printed version of the song appeared in Carl Sandburg’s The American Songbag in 1927, the song is believed to have been written during the late 1800s.

The “Marines’ Hymn” is the official hymn of the United States Marine Corps. It is the oldest official song in the United States military. Alternating bass pattern with some strange fingering on the treble side. From the Palmer Hughes accordion method book 2.
I play this traditional tune on a vintage Paolo Soprani 120 bass 4 reed block musette handmade in Castelfidardo Italy. Bought in on an auction for peanuts and it is in great shape for such an oldy. You can feel and hear the warm full sound and the history of this instrument.

I found this nice evolution timeline of the accordion (Dutch).

Happy new year! Another classic tune with alternating basses from the Palmer Hughes accordion course book 2. Some advanced fingering… for me that is

Happy tune form the Palmer Hughes accordion method book 2 and my first attempt on the challenging concept of alternating basses. The song also contains a rather silly register switch if you’d ask me

One thing is for sure… blowing into a reed bank is an absolute no-no!

Finally got my hands on the Palmer Hughes accordion method book 2… and a new Marinucci accordion too
I do love this tune. It’s so pure and simple. Goes straight to the heart. Be sure to check out this nice Paul Robeson original of the song on the tube.

Found this great performance. John Linnell and John Flansburgh are They Might Be Giants: multi-instrumental, tech-savvy and implacably prolific, they are the musicians of choice of geeks, tinkerers and curious kids of all ages.
